At that point, ‘Disintegration’ became quite a different dimension. That, in itself, already is quite symbolic, but the story got another dimension when these tapes, played at his New York appartment, accidentally became a soundtrack for the 2001 09-11 disaster. Removed from the context of that disaster and transposed into the mundane world we live in every day, The Disintegration Loops still wield an uncanny, affirming power. In The Disintegration Loops Stephen Cramer attempts to uncover the music within the world’s dissolution and fragmentation, from Italian masters painting over the work of previous artists, to the innocence of childhood giving way to scars, to the description of badly stored tapes being looped and played over and over again until they begin to flake. Basinksi watched the fall of the Twin Towers from his roof whilst The Disintegration Loops played in the background. If you can remember this analog reel-to-reel tapes (or cassettes), and imagine them to be used as a real physical loop (end glued to beginning), you can almost see how they started to deteriorate when played endlessly. Upon re-discovering his own archives, William Basinski found some old analog tape-recordings of some ‘pastoral pieces’ of his own work, recorded in the early 80’s. ![]()
